Former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has announced Engr. Kale Kawu is the consensus governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Kwara State.
Saraki said the decision followed what he described as “Extensive consultations” with party stakeholders and leading governorship aspirants within the Kwara PDP.
In a statement made available to journalists in Ilorin on Saturday, the former Governor of Kwara State said the adoption of Kawu was aimed at strengthening unity within the opposition party ahead of the crucial election.
“I am pleased to announce that, after extensive consultations with stakeholders of the Kwara PDP and our leading gubernatorial aspirants, we have arrived at a consensus candidate to fly the flag of our great party in the forthcoming gubernatorial election,” he stated.
According to him, Engr. Kale Kawu emerged as the preferred choice of the party following deliberations among key stakeholders and aspirants.
Saraki commended other aspirants who stepped down for the sake of party unity, noting that their decision reflected commitment to the collective interest of the PDP and Kwara State.
“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the other aspirants who, in the supreme interest of our party and state, have graciously stepped down to support this consensus. It is this spirit of unity and selflessness that will carry us to victory,” he added.
The PDP leader also urged party members, delegates and supporters to conduct themselves peacefully during the party’s governorship primary election scheduled for tomorrow.
“I wish all our members, delegates, and teeming supporters a successful, peaceful, and orderly outing at tomorrow’s gubernatorial primaries,” Saraki said.
