The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a state-owned driver’s licence in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), a move aimed at improving road safety, strengthening traffic regulation and accelerating the issuance process for motorists across the state.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Monday while presenting the achievements of the ministry during the Lagos State annual ministerial briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja, to commemorate the second-term seventh anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
According to Osiyemi, the new licence, which is expected to be rolled out within the next few weeks, “is in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, and will operate alongside the federal licence.”
He added that the initiative “will also improve road safety, strengthen traffic regulation and speed up the issuance process for motorists across the state.”
The commissioner also revealed that Lagos recorded a total of 737,340 traffic violations within the last one year through the Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera system deployed across the state.
He said the figures underscored the progress made by the government in adopting intelligent traffic management and digital surveillance technologies to monitor compliance and improve road safety.
Giving further details of the ministry’s activities within the review period, Osiyemi disclosed that 27,067 fresh driver’s licence applications were received, while 29,810 licence renewals were successfully completed. He added that 1,158 International Driver’s Permits were also processed during the period.
The commissioner further stated that 1,114,080 roadworthiness certificates were issued in the last one year, stressing that the state’s “No Vehicle Inspection, No Roadworthiness Certificate” policy would continue to be enforced through technology-driven operations.
