…Vows to Expose Corruption, Funding Sources of Aspirants
The Save Enugu Group (SEG) has launched what it described as a comprehensive accountability campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections in Enugu State, warning that political officeholders and aspirants would be subjected to scrutiny over performance, transparency, corruption and sources of campaign funding.
In a statement signed by its Assistant Secretary General, Ogbuefi Onyia Chuks, made available to the media in Abuja, the group said no politician, regardless of status or influence, would be exempted from investigation as political activities gather momentum in the state.
The statement, titled “Enugu Is Not for Sale: SEG Begins Full Accountability Probe Ahead of 2027,” accused some political actors of attempting to dominate the political space through questionable financial influence and propaganda.
SEG said it had commenced an evidence-based review of public officeholders and aspirants, focusing on performance, transparency and corruption.
“We are scrutinising records, tracking the use of public resources, and assessing the real impact of governance on the lives of citizens,” the group stated.
The organisation warned that any credible evidence of corruption, abuse of office, illicit enrichment, contract fraud or financial misconduct uncovered during the exercise would be made public and forwarded to anti-graft agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission for investigation.
SEG also disclosed that fresh entrants into politics and aspirants seeking elective offices for the first time would have their campaign funding sources, business interests and political backers scrutinised
“Enugu is not a haven for unexplained wealth, political money laundering, or shadowy investments disguised as public service,” the group declared.
The group further urged political parties to ensure credible and transparent candidate selection processes while calling on civil society organisations, professional bodies and the media to intensify scrutiny of political developments ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to SEG, the 2027 elections in Enugu State “must reflect only one authority — the will of the people.”
