Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi on Saturday raised concerns over what he described as a growing threat to democracy in Nigeria as he urge citizens to unite and rebuild the nation.
Speaking after attending the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) convention in Abuja, Obi said the country is at a dangerous crossroads.
According to him, the worsening insecurity, poverty, and economic hardship are evidences of governance failure.
He lamented that democratic institutions are weakening, while political actors who once championed justice are now accused of promoting electoral manipulation, intimidation, and impunity.

Also, he said that Nigeria is increasingly being viewed globally as a struggling state due to declining standards in accountability, rule of law, and governance.
Obi expressed appreciation to NDC leaders, including Seriake Dickson, for accommodating new members, while also acknowledging the role of David Mark and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in providing a platform during earlier political transitions.
Highlighting economic concerns, Obi noted that millions of Nigerians are facing multidimensional poverty, rising inflation, and unemployment, with businesses shutting down and insecurity affecting farming and livelihoods across the country.
He called for a shift toward productive sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing, emphasizing the need to empower youths and include women in governance.
Obi also stressed the importance of national unity beyond ethnic and religious lines, describing it as essential for Nigeria’s recovery.
He said Nigeria can overcome its challenges with competent, transparent, and compassionate leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
