SDP Expels Shehu Gabam At Bauchi Convention

…elect Prof Adewale Adebayo as Presidential candidate

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled its former National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, through a voice vote during the party’s convention in Bauchi.

The motion for the disciplinary measure, suspension, or expulsion of Alhaji Shehu Gabam was moved and seconded as item number eleven, where party delegates unanimously agreed during the party’s National Convention and Presidential Primaries 2026 held at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium on Saturday in Bauchi.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Convention Committee, Professor Usman Bugaje, thanked all members for their sacrifice in coming all the way from their respective locations to witness the event despite the numerous challenges they faced while travelling, saying this alone showed serious commitment and love for the party.

He blamed the present administration for failing to address problems confronting Nigerians, such as poor electricity supply, food scarcity, and the increasing number of graduates without jobs.

He commended the courage and conviction of members for standing up to change their future in Nigeria. Bugaje also accused leaders of using institutions such as the judiciary and democratic bodies like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as tools in the hands of unscrupulous politicians against opposition parties.

He said the attempt by the ruling party to block political space and eliminate competition and opposition was one of the most despicable developments in the country today.

“Those in the ruling party, INEC, and the judiciary who are aiding this situation should remember history. Late General Sani Abacha did what he could, but God did not allow him to succeed,” he said.

In his speech, the secretary of the party explained that the SDP is among the two oldest parties remaining in the country after the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), built on social democratic principles and firmly rooted in social justice and ideology.

He further explained that the national convention was in line with INEC electoral guidelines and disclosed that the party would contest all political positions in the 2027 general elections.

On his part, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee said, on behalf of the committee, that they were fully committed to conducting transparent, credible, fair, and peaceful elections, adding that every delegate’s vote mattered in line with the Electoral Act 2026.

“Our duty is to affirm our consensus arrangements. Therefore, I urge all supporters and stakeholders to show maturity, discipline, and respect for the laws governing this convention,” he said.

Similarly, during the convention, the party unanimously passed a motion for the approval and adoption of Professor Abubakar Sadiq as National Chairman, as well as Prince Adewale Adebayo and Engr. Ayuba Dauda Katagum is a presidential and governorship aspirant, respectively.

Our correspondent reports that the event witnessed the presence of high-profile stakeholders in the party, including Dr Usman Bugaje, the presidential candidate, among other dignitaries.
