…says operatives nabbed 280 suspected terrorists, others
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, has directed Commissioners of Police in charge of the 36 State Commands and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to conduct a comprehensive audit of arms and ammunition within their respective jurisdictions.
In executing the order, the police chief charged the CPs to ensure transparency and proper documentation, with detailed reports expected to be forwarded to the Force Headquarters within a timeframe.
Disu, who issued the orders on Tuesday in Abuja during his meeting with senior police officers from CPs and above, reiterated his zero tolerance for professional misconduct of all forms.
While expressing concern about the challenge of perception, the IGP vowed to restore public trust in the lead agency in internal security.
He said as part of the ongoing reforms, “I hereby direct all Commissioners of Police to immediately undertake a comprehensive audit of arms and ammunition within their respective Commands”
The “exercise”, he insisted, “must be thorough, transparent, and properly documented, with detailed reports forwarded to the Force Headquarters within the stipulated timeframe.
“The objective is clear: to strengthen accountability, identify existing gaps, and provide an accurate assessment of our operational needs.
“Let me emphasise that this is not a routine administrative task, but a critical measure to enhance our readiness, prevent misuse, and ensure that all assets entrusted to the Force are properly accounted for and optimally deployed.”
He seized the moment to provide operational successes recorded by the police across the country last month, including the arrest of 28 suspected terrorists.
“During April 2026, the Nigeria Police Force, during several intelligence-led operations recorded several successes. These include: the arrest of twenty-eight (28) suspected terrorists, fifty-one (51) murder/culpable homicide suspects, sixty-two (62) armed robbery suspects, eighty-five 85) suspected kidnapping suspects, while fifty-four (54) suspected cultists were also arrested.
“Activities of the police led to the rescue of one hundred and eighty-nine (189) victims of kidnapping.
“In the same vein, a total number of one hundred and forty (140) assorted firearms were recovered in different operations, while one thousand and seventy-four (1,074) various calibres of ammunition were also recovered. Thirty-seven (37) stolen vehicles were also recovered”, he disclosed.
He concluded by saying: “To every Commissioner of Police present today: you carry enormous responsibility. The officers under your command look to you for direction. The communities in your States look to you for protection. And look to you for results. Lead with integrity, lead with discipline, and lead with the people – and this Force will be transformed.
“To the Nigerian people: we hear you. We are working. We are reforming. We are accountable. Together – police and citizens – we will build a safer, more just Nigeria where every person can live and thrive without fear”.
