The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has extended warm felicitations to journalists and workers across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on the occasion of the 2026 Workers’ Day.

In a statement marking the celebration, Ike described this year’s theme, “Insecurity and Poverty: Bane of Decent Work,” as timely and reflective of the harsh realities confronting workers nationwide.

She noted that insecurity and economic hardship continue to undermine productivity, threaten livelihoods, and erode the dignity of labour.

Ike commended journalists and media professionals in the FCT for their resilience and dedication, despite operating in a challenging environment marked by safety risks.

“Journalists continue to inform, educate, and hold power to account under difficult conditions. Their courage and commitment to ethical journalism remain commendable,” she said.

Ike expressed concern that persistent insecurity not only endangers lives but also restricts access to information and limits the ability of journalists to perform effectively. She added that poverty and rising economic pressures have further worsened the welfare and morale of workers.

She called on governments at all levels to take decisive and sustained action to improve security and implement policies that directly address poverty.

“Creating a safe working environment and expanding economic opportunities are essential to achieving decent work for all Nigerians,” she stated.

The NUJ chairman also urged media organisations and employers in the FCT to prioritise the welfare of journalists through fair remuneration, improved working conditions, insurance coverage, and access to continuous professional development.

“As a union, we must strengthen our solidarity and continue to advocate for the rights, safety, and dignity of our members,” she added.

Ike encouraged journalists and workers to remain steadfast and committed despite prevailing challenges, emphasising the importance of collective effort in building a safer, more equitable, and prosperous society.
