Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, Femi Fani-Kayode, has cautioned opposition leaders im the country over alleged references to “Operation Wetie” following the opposition summit in Ibadan on Saturday.

Reacting through a statement on his social media page, Fani-Kayode described any allusion to the historic crisis as dangerous.

He urged political actors to weigh the consequences of their words and actions.

He warned that such rhetoric could inflame tensions and undermine national stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Operation Wetie” refers to a period of political violence in Nigeria’s Western Region during the mid-1960s, which preceded a series of military coups and eventually contributed to the Nigerian Civil War.

Fani-Kayode questioned the intent of opposition leaders who gathered at the Ibadan summit, asking whether references to the historical episode were meant as a threat.

He emphasized that the aftermath of that era included widespread violence, loss of lives, and long-term national instability.

The summit in Ibadan brought together prominent figures seeking to build a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress.

While reaffirming that democracy must be guided by the will of the people, Fani-Kayode stressed that peace remains paramount and warned against rhetoric capable of triggering unrest.
