Former Super Eagles striker, Michael Eneramo, has died after collapsing during a football match in Kaduna State.
The former Nigeria international was said to have slumped in the early hours of Friday while taking part in a routine training game at a primary school pitch in the Ungwan Yelwa area of Kaduna.
According to sources, Eneramo had completed the first half of the game without any sign of distress.
However, a few minutes into the second half, he suddenly collapsed on the pitch, causing panic among those present.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but was confirmed dead before arrival.
Eneramo, who was 40, enjoyed a successful playing career in Nigeria, Tunisia and Turkey before retiring from professional football in 2018.
The striker became popular during his time with Tunisian giants Esperance, where he established himself as one of the club’s leading forwards.
He later moved to Turkey, where he played for clubs including Besiktas, Sivasspor and Istanbul Basaksehir.
Despite reported attempts by Tunisia to convince him to switch allegiance, Eneramo chose to represent Nigeria at the international level.
He made his debut for the Super Eagles against Tunisia in a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier and announced himself with a goal in the encounter.
Eneramo went on to earn 10 caps for Nigeria and scored three goals for the national team.
After retiring from active football, he reportedly continued to keep fit through regular training sessions and recreational matches in Kaduna.
News of his sudden death has thrown the Nigerian football community into mourning, with tributes expected from former teammates, clubs and fans.
Eneramo is remembered as a hardworking striker whose loyalty to Nigeria and achievements at the club level earned him respect across the continent.
