Hamburg Winger Opens Up On Super Eagles Debut

Hamburg winger Philip Otele has expressed his immense pride after achieving a lifelong ambition of representing the Nigeria national football team.

Otele described his debut as a “Dream come true,” highlighting the deep personal significance of finally wearing the national colours.

Currently on loan from FC Basel, the Hamburger SV winger was a surprise inclusion in Eric Chelle’s provisional squad for the 2025 AFCON, and he made his long-awaited first appearance on Tuesday night, a moment he says he will cherish forever.

Otele made his senior debut in the closing moments of Nigeria’s hard-fought 2-2 draw against Jordan’s national football team in Antalya, coming on as a late substitute for Frank Onyeka to earn his first international cap.

“I’m very happy to be here, it’s a special moment for my family and me. First of all, I thank God,” he said.

“For me, it’s a dream come true. Every footballer wants to represent their country, and I’ve always wanted to play for Nigeria. It means a lot to my family and me.”

Otele’s journey to the Nigerian national football team has been defined by patience and determination. Despite missing out on the final squad for AFCON earlier this year, he remained a committed supporter — something he believes fuels his performances.

“I’m proud of this moment. Playing for your country gives you extra motivation,” he added.

“Being here means everything to me because I’ve followed the team for so long as a passionate fan.”

He is one of several new additions introduced during the Antalya training camp, alongside Emmanuel Fernandez and Yira Sor, as head coach Eric Chelle continues to broaden his squad options.

Otele will now be eager to build on this breakthrough and make a lasting impression in future call-ups as he pushes to secure a regular place in the team.
