The Enugu State Government yesterday confirmed an outbreak of rabies in the Igbo Etiti Local Government Area.
In a public notice, the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation warned residents to take immediate precautions, describing rabies as a highly fatal disease that affects both animals and humans.
According to the ministry, rabies is primarily transmitted through bites or saliva from infected animals, particularly dogs. It noted that once clinical symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal, underscoring the need for early preventive action.
As part of containment efforts, the government directed all dog owners to vaccinate their pets against rabies. Residents were also advised to restrain their animals and prevent them from roaming freely in order to reduce the risk of transmission.
