Rotary installs borehole in Lagos Island market

The Rotary Club of Lagos Central has inaugurated a new borehole and water project aimed at improving access to clean water for traders and residents in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island.

Speaking at the launch, Club President, Rotarian Elizabeth Ajilore, said the project reflects Rotary’s mission of “service above self” and contributes to four of the organisation’s key focus areas: water, sanitation and hygiene, community empowerment, environmental protection, and disease prevention.

“Clean and accessible water is not just a convenience; it is a foundation for good health, dignity, and economic activity,” Ajilore said. “This project ensures that access to safe water no longer remains a daily challenge.” She added that the initiative was Rotary’s way of recognising the hard-working traders and residents of the community.

“We believe that when communities thrive, businesses grow, families stay healthy, and the future becomes brighter,” she said, thanking donors, market leadership, and community members for their cooperation and support.

Governor of Rotary International District 9112, Rotarian Lanre Adedoyin, said the club conducted a needs assessment and discovered that access to clean water was a significant challenge in the community. To address this, the Rotary Club installed the borehole and provided a brand-new generator to power it.

“Without water, there is no life. We aim to create a lasting impact, and this project will improve their quality of life,” he said.

Expressing their gratitude, the Babaloja and Iyaloja of the market, Aderinto Kamarudeen and Modinot Ayinke, respectively, thanked the Rotarians for the generous gesture and assured that the facility would be properly maintained.
