Nigerian film director and producer, Mildred Okwo has sparked speculation about the future of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), suggesting that the current edition may mark the end of the long-running award.
Okwo expressed doubt about the awards continuing beyond this year in a post shared on his verified X handle on Monday, April 28.
In another post, he questioned whether the new ownership would continue funding projects that do not quickly generate returns.
She wrote, “I will be very surprised if this AMVCA is not the farewell edition.
“I doubt the new owners will be interested in shows that don’t make a serious ROI in the first few years of buying the business. It costs a lot of money to produce that show”.

Her remarks come amid wider discussions about the sustainability of the awards, especially in light of recent changes in ownership involving MultiChoice and shifts in its broader entertainment strategy.
Also, the increased focus of Multichoice Nigeria on its streaming service, Showmax, which is being positioned as a key driver of future revenue as competition intensifies in the digital streaming market.
Meanwhile, organisers of the AMVCA have announced the closure of voting for the 12th edition of the awards. Winners are expected to be unveiled on May 9.
In a statement released on Sunday, Africa Magic also appreciated viewers for taking part in the voting process.
