The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda has called on Nigerian youths to take a leading role in safeguarding and strengthening the nation’s democracy.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Information Strategy, Abimbola Tooki, Yilwatda urged young Nigerians, particularly those within the 25–55 age bracket, to actively engage in the democratic process and resist attempts by self-serving political actors to mislead citizens.
He described Nigeria’s democracy as being at a critical juncture, stressing that youths possess the energy, innovation, and patriotism required to sustain the country’s stability and progress.
Yilwatda noted that the APC remained a youth-driven political party, with over half of its membership comprising young people, adding that his emergence as National Chairman reflects the party’s commitment to generational inclusion and leadership renewal.
He warned against entrusting the nation’s future to individuals pursuing narrow personal ambitions, cautioning that such tendencies could reverse ongoing gains and return the country to instability.
While acknowledging the challenges associated with current reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC chairman maintained that the policies are already yielding positive indicators, including renewed investor confidence and increased interest in key sectors of the economy.
He further cited commendations from international bodies such as the World Bank as evidence that Nigeria is on a path to sustainable growth and economic recovery.
Yilwatda emphasised that an engaged and politically conscious youth population remains the strongest safeguard against democratic backsliding.
