RMAFC seeks stronger ties to boost investment inflows

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission has said it is strengthening collaboration with key government institutions to attract foreign investment and boost revenue generation.

This was contained in a press statement issued on Thursday by the Head of the Information and Public Relations Unit of the commission, Maryam Umar-Yusuf.

According to the statement, the Chairman of the commission, Dr Mohammed Bello Shehu, led a high-level delegation on a courtesy visit to the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in Abuja, where both parties discussed revenue mobilisation, investment facilitation, migration governance, and national development.

Shehu said the visit was aimed at securing the ministry’s collaboration to attract more foreign investment. The statement read, “Dr Shehu said the visit was aimed at seeking the collaboration of the Ministry to attract more foreign investment.”

The RMAFC chair added that the commission was planning a strategic oil and gas summit to attract investors into the upstream and downstream segments of the industry.

“Every legitimate revenue due to the Federation must be properly accounted for and distributed in accordance with the law,” he said.

The statement noted that the commission, as one of the 14 constitutional bodies, is responsible for monitoring revenue accruals into the Federation Account, ensuring proper disbursement in line with existing laws, reviewing revenue allocation formulas, and determining remuneration for public office holders.

It added that the commission is also empowered to request revenue-related information from any organisation as part of efforts to strengthen transparency and accountability.

Shehu acknowledged the support of agencies under the Ministry of Interior during previous inter-agency verification exercises, describing such cooperation as vital to effective governance.

He also commended reforms across agencies within the ministry, noting that improvements in immigration, civil defence, and related institutions had contributed to national development.

Responding, Tunji-Ojo said collaboration among ministries, departments, and agencies remained critical to achieving national progress. “Collaboration is the soul of governance. No institution can succeed in isolation, and our doors remain open to every agency committed to national development,” he said in the statement.

The minister explained that the ministry had prioritised migration management and immigration documentation as tools to drive economic growth, ease of doing business, and investor confidence.

“Our agenda has been to use migration management as an enabler of business. We have digitised major processes, simplified visa systems, improved transparency, and reduced bottlenecks so that investors can access Nigeria more easily,” he added.

The statement further said citizenship matters remain strictly governed by the Constitution, while investor-friendly residency pathways and long-term stay arrangements could be explored within existing legal provisions to support economic objectives.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Investment Monitoring Committee of the commission, Hon Enefe Ekene, said the committee oversees government investments and initiatives targeted at attracting foreign direct investment.

He noted that the decision to engage the Ministry of Interior was based on the need to promote a stable, transparent, and investor-friendly environment, adding that efficient migration and business entry systems were critical to boosting investor confidence and increasing national revenue.

The statement said both institutions agreed to deepen cooperation and pursue policies aimed at enhancing revenue generation, attracting investment, and advancing national development priorities.

The PUNCH earlier reported that foreign direct investment accounted for less than four per cent of total capital imported into Nigeria in 2025, despite a significant increase in overall foreign inflows, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.

The data showed that total capital importation rose to $23.22bn in 2025 from $12.32bn in 2024, reflecting a strong increase in foreign inflows during the year. However, FDI contributed only $923.01m, representing 3.97 per cent of the total.

This compares with $674.71m recorded in 2024, when FDI accounted for 5.48 per cent of total inflows, showing that although FDI grew by $248.30m year-on-year, its share declined as other investment categories expanded at a faster pace.
