The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) might appoint an interim National Caretaker Committee on Monday to fill the vacuum created by the judgement of the Supreme Court that nullified the Ibadan convention.
PDP board of trustees (BoT), which assumed interim leadership of the party, met immediately after the judgement and fixed the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday.
BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara had, in a statement, hinted that the board would soon convene a NEC meeting to appoint a caretaker committee so as to meet the deadline of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for fielding candidates for the 2027 general elections.
BoT Secretary, Dr Mu’Azu Babangida Aliyu, who briefed journalists after the board’s meeting on Thursday, said the BoT will meet again on Sunday, while the NEC meeting holds a day after.
Aliyu, who was the former Niger State governor, said the board has confirmed that the PDP Constitution provided that where the party is without a National Working Committee, the BOT will take over.
“The BOT has taken over the affairs of the Peoples Democratic Party,” he said, adding that the party has accepted the judgement from the Supreme Court.
“We are very happy that the Supreme Court has come clearly on this matter,” he stated.
The former governor said with the nullification of the Ibadan convention and upholding the judgement of the Court of Appeal, which affirmed the suspension of Kamaldeen Ajibade SAN, Senator Anyanwu, and others, “the interpretation of this judgement, therefore, clearly leaves the party without any recognised leadership, as both groups previously laying claims to the leadership have been divested of all interests by this judgement.
“We cannot, therefore, in good conscience, allow the party to become leaderless and rudderless and without direction,” he added.
