Oyi-Ayamelum Primary Election Cancelled Over Attacks On Returning Officer

Following the attacks on the State Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, Valentine Iliobi, the party’s National leadership has called for the cancellation of the primary election for Oyi-Ayamelum Federal Constituency.

This is as it equally called for a fresh conduct of the election in the area, which prompted both the committee on primary elections and the state Chairman of the party to take off to the Constituency.

One of the members of the State Working Committee of the party, the announcement of the results for the primary elections of the eleven Constituencies has been put on hold pending the repeat election of Oyi-Ayamelum Federal Constituency.

Narrating his ordeal in the hands of hired thugs, the state Publicity Secretary of the party, Sir Valentine Iliobi, told reporters that ;

“I was posted to Oyi local government area as Returning Officer for the National Assembly primary election for Oyi – Ayamelum Federal Constituency, and at Nteje, the collation centre, one of the aspirants from Nteje came with his thugs demanding the local government result sheets of the election, and I told them that it was not in my custody”

“The party gave every Returning Officer result sheets for the wards, while the local government result sheets are at the state headquarters of the party ”

Ilobi further said that about 15 thugs descended on him, beating him with all manner of weapons, and he had to flee for his dear life and ran to the house of the President General of Nteje Town.

He said, “I was at the PGs house not knowing that I am being held hostage by the people for three hours so I had to put a call to the Police Officer in charge of the Rabid Response Squad ( RRS) former SAS office and when they stormed where I was being held hostage, the thugs led by an aspirant from Nteje who ordered them to attack me saying that Nteje Town had not produced a member of the Federal House of Representatives before” he said.

Apparently trying to recover from the attack at Nteje last Saturday, Iliobi arrived at the APC headquarters in Awka on Sunday only to be attacked again by about 8 hoodlums who had been lying in wait for him, led by another aspirant from Nkwellezenaka Community.

As he made his way into the Central Collation Centre Awka, they took him on, demanding the result sheets for the primary election, and it took the intervention of security operatives at the party headquarters to save his life.

“At the party headquarters, I saw one of the aspirants in the company of about seven or eight thugs, and they rushed towards me trying to snatch the result sheets from me and they broke my phone, my bag and some of my personal belongings ”

The Chairman of our party, Sen Emma Anosike, ordered that I should be taken to the hospital, and one of the aspirants and former House of Representatives member from Onitsha North and South, Lynda Ikpeazu, asked her driver and personal assistants to drive me to this hospital ”

At the moment, Iliobi is still at the hospital responding to treatment, and according to medical personnel at the hospital, he needs to go for a chest x-ray and scan as well as his waist, which, according to him, appeared to have been badly affected
