Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina has opened up on his decision to represent Nigeria at the senior international level, despite earlier featuring for England’s youth teams.
Born in Southwark, London, to Nigerian parents, Aina was a regular for England’s youth sides during his development years.
He progressed through the ranks from the U16S to the U20S, earning more than 20 appearances for the Young Lions.
Although he received a call-up to the England U21S in 2015, the former Chelsea academy graduate eventually opted for Nigeria after training with the Super Eagles in London in March 2017.
Aina Explains Decision To Play For Nigeria
Reflecting on his decision, Ola Aina said his Nigerian heritage was the main factor behind his switch in international allegiance.
“Born and raised in London, I chose to play for Nigeria. It was simply a decision I made when I was around 20. That’s where my parents are from; that’s my heritage,” Aina told Nottingham Forest’s YouTube channel.

“The opportunity presented itself, and I believed it was the right one at that moment, so I embraced it wholeheartedly, and here I am today.”
The Nottingham Forest defender also spoke about the emotional pride his family feels whenever he represents the Super Eagles.
“My family is extremely proud of me, particularly when I wear the Super Eagles shirt.
“They cherish it even more than I do. For me, it’s a privilege; it’s an honour. It’s truly remarkable to play for them.”
Since making the switch, Aina has established himself as a key figure for Nigeria.
He played a crucial role in the Super Eagles’ run to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, where his performances earned him a place in the tournament’s official Best XI.
