Former Labour Party presidential candidate and Chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi has announced his defection from the ADC to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Giving reasons for his defection, he cited internal crises within the party and the urgent need to address Nigeria’s worsening situation.
Obi said his decision followed deep reflection on the state of the nation, emphasizing that it was not driven by personal ambition but by a commitment to justice, accountability, and better governance.
He disclosed that he joined the NDC alongside Rabiu Kwankwaso, former defence minister and Kano State Governor with the aim of continuing the push for what he described as a new Nigeria.

Explaining his exit from the ADC, Obi alleged that persistent litigations and internal disruptions within opposition parties were deliberately orchestrated to weaken participation in the democratic process.
He, however, expressed gratitude to the ADC leadership, particularly David Mark, and acknowledged the support of political allies including Atiku Abubakar.
Obi also warned against actions that could undermine democracy, urging the government to avoid encouraging crises within political parties, stressing that strong opposition is essential for a healthy democratic system.
Highlighting Nigeria’s challenges, he pointed to rising poverty, insecurity, and economic hardship, noting that many citizens are losing faith in the system.
He called on Nigerians, especially youths and women, to remain hopeful and engaged, insisting that national transformation requires collective effort and resilience.
It will be recalled that Obi had recently joined the ADC after defectimg from the Labour Party where he contested the 2023 presidential election.
