…Commends DSS–Media Relations
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for sustained commitment to press freedom as a critical pillar for peace, national development, and democratic governance.
In a statement marking World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) 2026 by the NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the Union reaffirmed the importance of a free, independent, and responsible media in advancing human rights and strengthening democratic institutions.
The NUJ noted that this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” reflects Nigeria’s current realities, stressing that journalism plays a vital role in fostering peace, accountability, and stability, especially in a complex security environment.
The Union expressed cautious optimism over what it described as improving relations between the Department of State Services (DSS) and the media, citing a noticeable decline in cases of intimidation, harassment, and arbitrary arrests of journalists.
It commended the leadership of the DSS, particularly the Director-General, for promoting a more professional and constructive engagement with media practitioners, noting that such cooperation is essential for building a peaceful and secure society.
However, the NUJ urged that these gains be sustained through continuous dialogue, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law, emphasizing that press freedom remains a constitutional right.
The Union also called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to emulate the DSS by respecting journalists’ rights and creating an enabling environment for media operations.
Reiterating its commitment to responsible journalism, the NUJ urged media practitioners to uphold ethical standards, including accuracy, fairness, and accountability in their reportage.
It further stressed that the media and security institutions should be seen as partners rather than adversaries in the collective effort to promote peace, protect human rights, and drive national development.
