NiMet Warns Kaduna Against Flood

Launches Awareness Campaign

Kaduna State Government has intensified public awareness and emergency preparedness efforts, following the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) report released by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

The report identified Kaduna among states at high risk of flooding due to the forecast of above-normal rainfall during the 2026 rainy season.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, the government said proactive measures are being strengthened to safeguard lives and property through coordinated sensitisation and disaster response initiatives.

According to the forecast, rainfall in Kaduna State is expected to commence between May 19 and June 10, 2026, with cessation projected between October 5 and October 21, 2026.

The statement said that the prediction also indicates the possibility of a severe 21-day dry spell between June and August, conditions capable of worsening flooding and related environmental challenges.

“The Kaduna State Government is taking this forecast seriously. Early preparedness and public cooperation remain critical to reducing the impact of flooding on our communities,” Malam Maiyaki stated.

He disclosed that the Ministry of Information and Culture, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), has commenced a statewide sensitisation campaign to educate residents on flood prevention, mitigation, and safety measures.

The Commissioner urged residents to clear drainages around homes and business premises, avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse into waterways, and adopt preventive measures such as the use of sandbags and other local flood control remedies.

He also called on traditional institutions, religious leaders, media organisations, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to support government efforts by promoting environmental sanitation and disseminating verified information to the public.

The statement added that KADSEMA has also commenced vulnerability assessments in flood-prone communities, strengthened emergency response coordination, and begun pre-positioning for rescue operations in high-risk areas.

“The safety of citizens remains a top priority for the Kaduna State Government. We will continue to work with all relevant agencies and communities to ensure timely information dissemination and effective disaster risk reduction measures throughout the rainy season,” the Commissioner added.
