Lagos Unveils 10-day Burial Rites For Akran Of Badagry

The Lagos State Government has announced a 10-day burial programme for the late Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu-Tovi 1, who died on Jan. 12, 2026. Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, disclosed this yesterday during a media briefing held in Badagry.

Salu-Hundeyin, also Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, said the ceremonies would run from April 23 to May 6. “The Lagos State Government, under Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is committed to honouring the Akran befittingly. “That commitment is reflected in the composition of this committee and the care devoted to planning these activities.

“You will notice this announcement took time. That was deliberate to align with traditional rites and existing state programmes. “It was necessary to strike the right balance, so everything is conducted properly and respectfully,” she said. She outlined events beginning April 23 with gun salutes, Iwure prayers and Ajogan parades across Badagry’s eight quarters.

“This includes traditional gun salutes across the quarters and prayers at the Akran Palace. “On April 24, a novelty football match, Aholu Menu Toyi I, will be held at Badagry Grammar School. “April 25 will feature community service, medical outreach at the palace and sanitation across Badagry,” she added.

She said days four to six would feature homage visits by associations, businesses, artisans and groups to the Akran Palace. “April 29 includes inspection of project sites such as Badagry Central Palace and Menu Toyi I Square. “There will also be a Christian Association of Nigeria procession on the same day.

“April 30 will feature a youth programme, including Fitila Night processions and a night of tribute at the palace. “On May 1, a Jumat service will be held at Central Mosque, alongside the Akran Legacy Festival at Marina. “May 2 will feature an interdenominational service at Freeman Memorial Methodist Cathedral.

“A foundation laying ceremony for Aholu Menu-Toyi I Park and a grand reception will follow at Badagry Grammar School. “May 3 will be a thanksgiving service at the cathedral, with a reception at the Methodist Mission House.

“The final day, May 6, will feature Zangbeto processions, Hungan drumming and Oro traditional rites across Badagry. “These activities reflect the depth of tradition, culture and leadership that defined the monarch’s reign,” she said.
