Lagos Arraigns NURTW Chieftain For Involuntary Manslaughter

The Lagos State Government has arraigned a chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsudeen Oladiti, alias Shamelon, at a Lagos High Court in Ikeja over alleged involuntary manslaughter of a dispatch rider.

He was docked before Justice Lawal Alebiosu on a three-count charge of involuntary manslaughter, conspiracy and attempted murder.

The defendant however pleaded not guilty to the charge upon his arraignment. Afterwards, defence lawyer, Olanrewaju Ajanaku, drew the court’s attention to a bail application filed on behalf of his client.

He added that the application has been served on the prosecution. The prosecution’s lawyer, Jubril Kareem, raised no objection to the bail application.

He, however, noted that the defence had sought an order directing the correctional centre to confirm the defendant’s medical status.

This position was confirmed by the defence lawyer. Justice Lawal Alebiosu later granted the application and ordered the Controller of Corrections, Kirikiri, to confirm the defendant’s medical status at a state government hospital. Further hearing in the matter has been adjourned to June 15 for commencement of trial.
