Kingibe Laments Worsening Socio-Economic Conditions In Nigeria

The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Ireti Kingibe has expressed concerns over Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic conditions, warning that the country is sliding into a deeper crisis amid rising insecurity, economic hardship and declining public services.

Senator Kingibe, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), spoke at the party’s National Convention in Abuja, where she addressed participants on behalf of ADC lawmakers in the National Assembly.

She said growing frustration among Nigerians is being driven by the increasing difficulty in accessing basic necessities, including electricity, food and healthcare.

Highlighting the severity of the situation, Kingibe noted, “The well-being of the people is the true measure of any government.

“As members of the National Assembly, we are custodians of the law and watchdogs of democracy. We may not be many; 10 Senators and 25 members of the House of Representatives, but we have remained steadfast and resolute with this great party, the African Democratic Congress.

“Today, we are confronted with unprecedented insecurity: no light, no food, erratic telecommunications, and inadequate medical care.

“Indeed, we are witnessing a country in clear meltdown, a country that is no longer aligned with the interests of its people.”

She said the ADC sees itself as a platform representing the interests of ordinary Nigerians and positioning itself as an alternative political force.

“It is evident that those of us in the African Democratic Congress are the true representatives of the people.

“We stand with them, we support them, and we are here to help rescue them,” Kingibe said.

The Senator also stressed the importance of a vibrant opposition in sustaining democratic governance, warning against a political environment where dissenting voices are weakened.

Despite challenges faced by opposition figures, she said lawmakers in the bloc remain committed to their responsibilities.

“National Assembly members have faced intimidation and harassment, yet we remain here.

“Together, we will work, we will persevere, and we will move forward to victory,” she said.

Kingibe urged party members and supporters to remain resilient, emphasizing the need for sustained engagement in addressing the country’s challenges ahead of future elections.
