Queen of Afrobeats and celebrated Nigerian singer, Tiwatope Savage, better known as Tiwa Savage has opened up about the shift from R&B to Afrobeats.
According to the mother of one, after moving to Nigeria in 2012, she was inspired by the expansion of the Nigerian music business, leading to her switch.
Savage, who started her career abroad as Mary J. Blige’s backing vocalist, came home and signed with Mavin Records under music executive Don Jazzy.

The vocalist of “Kele Kele Love” stated in a recent interview on Arise TV that it was first challenging to transition from R&B to street sounds.
“It was difficult for me to transition from R&B to street sounds. But when I was at Mavin Records, Don Jazzy opened my mind to so many different things.
“He made me believe that talent was not limited, that I could do anything if I really focused on it.
“He took me out of that R&B bubble and introduced me to other sounds,” she explained.
Savage said she has no regrets about returning to Nigeria and switching to Afrobeats.
