Former England international footballer, James Milner has announced his retirement from professional football, ending a more than 20-year career in the Premier League.
After playing for Brighton & Hove Albion for the previous three seasons, the 40-year-old midfielder, who was renowned for his adaptability and reliability, was out of contract.
Earlier in 2026, Milner achieved the record for the most appearances in Premier League history, solidifying his place among the league’s most lasting players.

Prior to playing for Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton, he started his career at Leeds United.
He made over 600 appearances in the Premier League and established himself as one of English football’s most dependable utility players.
Before relocating to Liverpool, where he won another league championship and the UEFA Champions League in 2019, Milner had great success at Manchester City, where he won two Premier League titles.
Milner considered his lengthy career and the lessons he learned along the way in a statement posted on social media on Monday.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country at two European Championships and two World Cups.
“But more than anything, it’s the people and friendships I’ve made throughout the game that I’ll cherish forever,” he said.
Milner also represented England at major international tournaments, including two UEFA European Championships and two FIFA World Cups, and earned widespread respect for his professionalism, fitness and leadership throughout his career.
His retirement marks the end of one of the Premier League’s longest and most consistent playing careers.
