The All Progressives Congress (APC) has elected former Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, SAN, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election following the conclusion of the party’s primary election.
The results, announced by the Chairman of the APC Governorship Primary Committee, retired AIG John Bassey Abang, showed that Abubakar defeated six other aspirants to clinch the party’s ticket.
Abang disclosed that the former governor secured 57,517 votes in the exercise conducted on Friday, May 22.
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, came second with 26,001 votes, while Bala Maijama’a A. Wunti polled 13,648 votes.
Nura Manu Soro secured 13,638 votes, Kabir Baba Ma’aji got 8,157 votes, Baba Abubakar Suleiman polled 7,688 votes, while Yakubu Yakubu Abdullahi scored 7,181 votes.
The committee chairman said the former governor fulfilled all constitutional and party requirements and emerged as the winner after scoring the highest number of votes cast in the primary.
Recall that Abubakar governed Bauchi State from 2015 to 2019 on the APC platform.
Some political observers believe his victory signals a major political comeback as the APC intensifies efforts to reclaim Bauchi State from the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2027.
Meanwhile, the party also concluded its House of Representatives, Senate and State House of Assembly primaries held on Saturday, Monday and Thursday across various constituencies in the state.
