Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress, citing alleged irregularities in the party’s recently concluded primary elections.
Lawal announced his resignation in a statement issued on Monday, accusing party leaders of manipulating the primary process in favour of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his political allies.
According to the former SGF, the primaries were “massively rigged” to ensure the emergence of Atiku as the party’s preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The resignation marks a significant development within the ADC, coming just days after the party’s national convention and the emergence of Atiku as its presidential flag bearer.

While details of Lawal’s resignation letter were still emerging at the time of filing this report, his departure is expected to intensify internal disputes within the party, which has recently been grappling with leadership and legal challenges.
The latest development also raises fresh questions about unity within the opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections, as prominent party figures continue to voice concerns over the conduct of the primaries.
Neither the ADC leadership nor representatives of Atiku had issued an official response to Lawal’s allegations as of the time of this report.
