Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election.
The result of the party’s presidential primary election was announced on Wednesday night through a statement published on the ADC’s official X account.
According to the party, Atiku defeated former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in the nationwide contest.

“Atiku defeats Amaechi, Hayatudeen to secure ADC Presidential Ticket,” the statement read.
The party disclosed that Atiku polled 1,855,787 votes to defeat Amaechi, who scored 509,397 votes, while Hayatu-Deen secured 180,903 votes.
The ADC added that a total of 2,546,457 votes were cast during the exercise from a total party membership of 3,113,599 eligible participants.
“Final result: Atiku 1,855,787, Amaechi 509,397, Hayatudeen 180,903. Total votes cast in the election: 2,546,457. Total party membership for the election: 3,113,599. Congratulations to Waziri Atiku,” the party stated.
A breakdown of the results showed that Atiku defeated Amaechi by a margin of 1,346,390 votes and led Hayatu-Deen by 1,674,884 votes.
The ADC presidential primary began on Monday, May 25, 2026, with party members across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory participating in the process.
The party adopted the direct primary method after efforts to reach a consensus arrangement among the leading aspirants reportedly failed.
Party officials had initially considered an affirmation process, but later resolved to proceed with direct primaries in line with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
The outcome of the exercise positions Atiku as the ADC’s standard-bearer for the 2027 presidential election amid ongoing political realignments across major opposition parties.
