…As NHRC Demands Zero Tolerance To Attacks On Journalists, Media Firms

The Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has demanded zero tolerance for attacks on journalists and media organisations.

The Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Dr Tony Ojukwu (SAN), made the call in a statement to commemorate the World Press Freedom Day observed every year on May 3.

He called for the protection of media professionals and an end to impunity. According to him, a free press is the lifeblood of any thriving democracy, while stressing the need for zero tolerance against all forms of violations targeted at journalists and media houses.

“A free, independent and pluralistic media is indispensable, not only to the protection of human rights, but also to the survival and deepening of democracy.

“There is a direct and undeniable correlation between press freedom and democratic governance, where the media thrives freely, accountable, transparent, and ensure citizen participation are strengthened.”
