The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has said the ruling party is not perturbed by the defection of Peter Obi to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), insisting that the development poses no threat to the APC’s dominance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yilwatda stated this during an interaction with journalists in Abuja, where he reaffirmed the party’s commitment to internal democracy and credible primaries, even as political realignments continue within the opposition.
He expressed confidence in the APC’s internal processes, noting that the ongoing sale and submission of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms reflect transparency, inclusiveness, and the party’s readiness for the electoral contest.
According to him, the APC remains the only political platform with a clearly defined democratic structure that allows aspirants to freely test their popularity without undue interference.
“The APC provides a level playing field for all aspirants. While consensus is part of our constitutional framework, it will not be imposed on anyone. Our focus is to deepen democracy and strengthen internal cohesion,” he said.
The APC chairman dismissed concerns raised by some aspirants over alleged pressure to adopt consensus candidates, reiterating that participationll in such arrangements remains voluntary.
Commenting on recent opposition movements, Yilwatda described them as signs of instability and lack of ideological direction.
His remarks came against the backdrop of Obi’s reported exit from the African Democratic Congress ( ADC) and alignment with a new political coalition under the NDC, a move widely seen as part of efforts to consolidate opposition forces ahead of the next general elections.
However, Yilwatda downplayed the significance of the development, arguing that frequent defections among opposition figures underscore a lack of consistency and structure.
“Political movements and defections are not new in Nigeria. What is important is stability, vision, and the capacity to govern effectively. That is what the APC represents,” he stated.
He also highlighted the achievements of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda are already delivering results in critical sectors such as infrastructure, security, and the economy.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, the APC leadership expressed optimism that the party will emerge stronger and more united, maintaining its electoral advantage over rival political platforms.
