Another Dispatch Rider Killed Hours After Fatal Tanker Crash In Lagos

Less than 24 hours after a dispatch rider was crushed to death by a tanker in Lagos, another fatal accident has claimed the life of a rider, deepening concerns over road safety for commercial motorcyclists in the state.

The latest incident occurred on Tuesday at Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where a dispatch rider was killed in a collision involving a heavy-duty Volvo truck.

Confirming the development, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority described the crash as devastating, noting that the impact led to the immediate death of the rider at the scene.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, the agency said the tragedy reveals the growing vulnerability of dispatch riders navigating major highways in Lagos.

LASTMA officials on routine patrol reportedly responded swiftly, securing and cordoning off the accident scene to prevent further incidents, especially given the heavy traffic along the corridor.

The remains of the deceased were handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, who were present to support traffic management and recovery efforts. Police officers from the Alausa Division also provided security to maintain order during the evacuation process.

Authorities confirmed that both the truck and the dispatch motorcycle were promptly cleared from the road, allowing traffic flow to return to normal.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the victim’s family, describing the loss as deeply distressing. He stressed the need for stricter adherence to traffic regulations and heightened vigilance among all road users.

Bakare-Oki also reiterated the agency’s commitment to working with stakeholders to improve road safety awareness and reduce fatalities across Lagos State.

The back-to-back fatalities have reignited public concern over the safety of dispatch riders, who face increasing risks on highways dominated by heavy-duty vehicles.
