The Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, has commended the peaceful conduct of the All Progressives Congress (APC) direct primaries in Uyo Ward 6, also known as Offot 1, describing the exercise as a clear demonstration that democracy has come to stay in Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking during the House of Representatives primary election at his collation centre, St. Michael Primary School, Uyo, the SSG said the orderly conduct and massive turnout of party faithful reflected the confidence of the people in the leadership of Governor Umo Eno and the democratic process.
He noted that the direct primary system has provided party members the opportunity to openly identify with candidates of their choice, stressing that the overwhelming support witnessed for Rt. Hon. Mark Essiet was an indication of the candidate’s popularity among the people.
The SSG stated that, unlike the delegate system, where a few persons determine the outcome of elections, the direct primary process allows all members to decide who emerges as their candidate.
He expressed satisfaction with the peaceful atmosphere throughout the exercise, adding that the era of violence and tension associated with party primaries was gradually fading away in the State.
Prince Uwah, who doubles as Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the All Progressives Congress in the state, maintained that the same level of support would be replicated during subsequent primaries for the Senate, House of Assembly and governorship positions.
He called on the people of the state to continue in their steadfast support for Governor Eno, whom he described as a leader committed to peace, development and good governance.
The SSG further attributed the large turnout of women during the exercise to the impact of good governance in the State, noting that women naturally identify with purposeful and people-oriented leadership.
At the end of the exercise, the Returning Officer, Mr Jude Oliver, declared Hon. Mark Essiet the winner of the primaries amidst jubilation by supporters and party faithfuls.
