In a bid towards averting flood disasters within Awka, Anambra State Capital, the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has commenced the demolition of Illegal Structures in the area.

Similarly the Authority has also commenced the opening of drainages and water channels in the area for easy flow of water when it rains.

Recall that the last heavy down pure led to the submerging of over five buildings rendering 13 families homeless in the Capital City.

According to the MD/ CEO of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA )Ozo Ossy Onuko in a statement , the demolition would affect buildings blocking the waterways and must be removed irrespective of the sizes of those structures.

“The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority ACTDA is currently carrying out enforcement operations including removal of illegal structures obstructing waterways and drainage channels within the Capital Territory”

“This action is in response to the increasing cases of flooding caused by blocked waterways”

“The Authority also warn land grabbers and developers against the sale or allocation of waterways to unsuspecting members of the public for any form of development”he said.

The Authority hereby issue a stern warning that any structure , regardless of of size found to be obstructing waterways or drainage channels will be removed without further delay .

Onuko noted that at every rainy season lives and property are lost by residents of the Capital Territory due to flooding caused by the blockage of the waterways and channels stating that residents or shop owners that fail to clear and open up the channels or drainage in front of their residence may face penalties.
