Anambra Police Commissioner Ikioye Orutugu has handed down a 48-hour order to all formations within the Command to fish out the attackers of the security operatives attached to the Chief of Staff (CoS) to Governor Charles Soludo, Chief Ben Nwankwo.
The CSO had attended a function where he represented the Governor, and on his way back to Awka, the incident occurred.
According to reports, the gunmen had laid an ambush along the Amansea-Ufuma road at around 8.30 pm on Sunday and attacked the operatives and other civilians, which led to the demise of two policemen and some civilians.
However, the Chief of Staff, Chief Ben Nwankwo, escaped with the assistance of his official driver on that fateful day.
Speaking shortly after an in-house meeting with officers in charge of the respective formations in the Command, Orutugu ordered that ;
“Following this unfortunate incident, the Anambra Police Command has issued a 48-hour order on officers and men of the State Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Anti-Robbery Squad, Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Anti-Violent Crimes Department to fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act ”
Orutugu, however, urged members of the public to be mindful of persons claiming to be policemen on check point through identifying a well branded Police vehicle, as it has been found that the miscreants now wear police and army uniforms while in operation.
“The general public is hereby advised to be vigilant over the presence of persons at the various checkpoints because the miscreants now wear security uniforms to operate.
“Also, the Amansea- Ufuma road is a stretch of very lonely road, hence commuters and members of the public in general should apply caution while making use of the road, as it has in the recent past been a den of criminals”
Orutugu, however, reassured members of the public that the Command remains committed and battle-ready to guarantee the safety of lives and property of Ndi-Anambra, adding that in the next 48 hours, there shall be results.
