Itsekiri ethnic nationality in Warri, Delta State has called on relevant government and security agencies to rescue them over alleged plans by neighbouring Ijaw and Urhobo ethnic groups to attack its communities.
Speaking on behalf of her people on Friday in Lagos was the Igba of Warri, Chief (Mrs) Rita Lori Ogbebor, who appealed to the federal and state governments to prevent the re-occurrence of the crisis that occurred between 1997 and 2003, where scores of her people were killed and several communities ravaged.
According to her, the call for help is sequel to recent press conference called by the leadership of the two ethnic nationalities where they (Ijaw and Urhobo leaders) allegedly promised to ‘deal’ with Itsekiris for opposing moves by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to create new wards in Warri township.
She stated that the Itsekiri people in Warri and its environs are peace loving people who would love to live with people of other ethnic nationalities but that the vibes coming from the leaders of the two other nationalities in recent times have called for concern hence the need to raise the alarm.
“We all know the problems of the Urhobo, Ijaw, and Itsekiri in Warri. It is a long-time issue, but politicians have added their own ambition to it. Warri is the economic hub of Delta State. It is a place where everybody can settle because the Itsekiri are very liberal.
