A male Nigerian pilgrim participating in the 2026 Hajj exercise has reportedly died at Muzdalifah in Saudi Arabia shortly after arriving from Arafat.
The deceased, believed to be from Bauchi State, reportedly died in the early hours of yesterday during the overnight movement of pilgrims from Arafat to Muzdalifah. According to reports, Saudi security officials and emergency medical personnel were seen evacuating the body from the area shortly after the incident.
Witnesses said the pilgrim was wheeled out by Saudi police officers alongside members of an emergency medical team, while two officials believed to be attached to the Bauchi State pilgrims contingent accompanied the evacuation process, reports Daily Trust.
The report also stated that authorities had yet to officially confirm the identity of the deceased pilgrim, and the cause of death remained unclear.
The incident occurred during one of the most physically demanding stages of the Hajj pilgrimage, which involves continuous movement of pilgrims between holy sites under harsh weather conditions and heavy crowds.
Meanwhile, Muslim faithful took part in the climactic ritual of the annual hajj pilgrimage yesterday, symbolically stoning the devil near Mecca.
From dawn, crowds of pilgrims gathered in the valley of Mina, southeast of the holy city of Mecca, to throw pebbles at concrete pillars symbolising the devil. It re-enacts the Prophet Abraham’s stoning of the devil at three places where Satan is said to have tried to dissuade him from obeying God’s command to sacrifice his son Ishmael. More than 1.7 million people are taking part in the hajj this year.
The pilgrimage is a requirement for all Muslims to perform at least once in their life if they have the means.
The most important festival in Islam has, for the third year in a row, been overshadowed by war — this time the US-Israeli conflict with Iran that has drawn in the Gulf nations.
A fragile ceasefire, in place since April 8, has mostly brought a halt to the fighting, but diplomatic efforts to bring the war to a definitive end have proved inconclusive so far.
