The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to recent comments attributed to Governor Douye Diri, suggesting that opposition parties in the state would soon “learn the game of incumbency” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A press statement issued on Monday, 25 May, 2026 signed by Ikaebimo Mark, Bayelsa State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, stated that “while the Governor is entitled to his political views, the PDP wishes to respectfully remind him and his supporters that no political power is greater than the collective will of the people.
The statement continued: “Political history in Nigeria has repeatedly shown that incumbency, without genuine grassroots support and public trust, cannot withstand the determination of a united people seeking change, justice, and purposeful leadership.
“The PDP remains firmly rooted in the hearts of Bayelsans. Bayelsa has a long-standing relationship with the PDP, built on years of shared struggles, sacrifice, development, and an unwavering commitment to the growth and progress of the Ijaw nation and the entire state.
“Unlike those who depend solely on the temporary privileges of political office, the PDP continues to draw its strength from the grassroots, the youths, women, elders, workers, communities, and ordinary citizens who remain committed to the ideals, vision, and leadership direction of the party.
“Under the leadership of Hon. Barr. Alabh George Turnah, MON, the PDP in Bayelsa State remains focused, united, and determined to build a broad-based political movement founded on inclusiveness, fairness, effective representation, and service to the people.
“We therefore urge Bayelsans not to be intimidated by statements intended to project political invincibility.
“Democracy belongs to the people, not to those in power. Elections are ultimately decided by the votes, voices, and convictions of the people.
“The PDP remains confident that the people of Bayelsa State will continue to stand with a party that has consistently identified with their aspirations, defended their interests, and provided a credible platform for political participation, unity, and development,” the statement read.
