The Sokoto State Water Board has completed emergency repairs on a major water pipeline that burst earlier this week, flooding a section of the city and disrupting supply.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Sokoto, the General Manager of the Board, Engr. Aminu Haruna Mika’ilu said that the incident occurred when a high-pressure surge from the main pump caused the pipeline to burst, turning the affected area into what looked like a river.
According to the statement, this caused water to be gushing several meters into the air at the site.
“We give thanks to Allah for giving us the ability to complete this work this evening, Friday, 22/05/2026,” the statement read.
It added that the repair operation ran day and night, using 15 water pumping machines to clear the flooded area before engineers could access and fix the damaged pipeline.
The statement said further, “Officials credited the swift resolution to the coordination between the Water Board team and the state’s leadership.
The statement quoted Engr. Aminu Haruna Mikailu commended the technical staff for their determination and expertise in handling the issue.
It also appreciated Gov Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, saying, “He did not hesitate after being notified of the incident and immediately approved all resources needed for the response.”
“We pray to Allah to reward him abundantly, Ameen,” the statement added.
With the repairs now completed, the Board said normal water supply would resume and apologised to the residents for the disruption.
It also assured the public that further updates would follow as the system stabilises.
The pipeline burst is one of several infrastructure challenges Sokoto State has faced this year, as the government works to expand and maintain water supply in the state capital and surrounding LGAs.
