Kwara PDP Secretary Arraigned For Alleged Defamation

Remanded after stalled bail application

The Publicity Secretary of the Kwara State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Sholyment Olusegun Olusola, has been arraigned before the Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin on a two-count charge bordering on alleged defamation and conduct said to be capable of causing public disturbance.

He was brought before Justice T.S. Umar over allegations connected to statements considered offensive to the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and capable of unsettling public peace.

Speaking after his court appearance, Olusola said he honoured the court’s invitation without hesitation.

“Upon being contacted by the court bailiff on the phone, I did not hesitate for a moment to honour the invitation, as I willingly made myself available before the court for arraignment in respect of the rule of law and the judicial process,” he said.

The defendant also expressed disappointment over the court’s decision on his bail request.

“It is sad that despite the bail application duly filed by my counsel and orally presented before the court, my Lord declined to grant bail because the application had not been formally moved,” he noted, adding that the matter has been adjourned till June 10, 2026, for further hearing.

While acknowledging that the bail decision rests solely with the court, he described the development as one with “a bitter taste,” suggesting what he called a political undertone against opposition voices in the State.

However, he maintained respect for the judiciary and urged his supporters to remain calm.

“I therefore urge all our supporters, friends and PDP members across the state to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding. Moments like this are part of the sacrifices often demanded in the struggle for democracy and a better Kwara ahead of 2027,” he said.

He added that his political movement would continue regardless of his personal circumstances, insisting that “this struggle must continue irrespective of whether I am physically present or not, and by the grace of God, our victory is certain.”
