Popular Nigerian Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage has revealed that the record label an artist decides to sign with significantly impacts their mental health and wellbeing.
Speaking on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast with Joey Akan, Savage said she did not fully understand the importance of label support until she left Mavin Records.
According to her, at Mavin, she could turn to label boss Don Jazzy and fellow artists for emotional support during online controversies.

She said, “Who you signed to is very important, and I didn’t appreciate it until after I left Mavin.
“Whenever there’s a controversy online, I’d run to Don Jazzy’s room, sit on the floor or bed with other Mavin acts, and we would talk about it. I would cry if I had to cry, and we would get through it.
Savage said that, unlike Nigerian-based labels, foreign labels tend to prioritise business over personal issues, and she misses the family-like structure she had at Mavin.
But being with a [foreign] label, they don’t really care about your personal stuff. So, I can’t really go to the office and cry. I miss that part it.”
