We Are Not A United Nation, My Primary Goal Is To Unite Nigeria – Obi

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said that his primary objective, if elected president, would be to unite Nigeria and restore citizens’ confidence in the country through good governance and security.

Speaking after undergoing the party’s screening exercise in Abuja, Obi said Nigeria cannot achieve meaningful development without unity, security and inclusiveness.

According to him, governance should guarantee that mothers no longer live in fear over the safety and future of their children.

“We want mothers to feel safe when their children go to school or work. We want a Nigeria where people can travel freely across the country without fear,” he said.

Obi lamented the current hardship facing many Nigerians, noting that millions go to bed daily uncertain of their next meal, adding that the situation must change.

“We are not a united nation. The first task is to bring the country together by ensuring fairness, justice and adherence to the Constitution, especially on federal character and inclusiveness,” he stated.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson of his campaign organisation, Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), Ibrahim Umar, Obi also stressed the need to fight corruption and prevent public resources from being converted into personal wealth.

“Politicians are more concerned about the next election while citizens continue to suffer. That has to change,” he added.
The former Anambra State governor further described the lengthy screening process as evidence of internal democracy and due process within the NDC.

“The NDC is committed to doing things properly. The screening was aimed at ensuring that aspirants meet constitutional requirements and provide the necessary documentation,” Obi explained.

On reports that he may emerge as the party’s sole presidential candidate, Obi said he was unaware if any other aspirant had obtained or submitted nomination forms.

“I do not know whether anybody else has submitted an application. Until the party officially declares me the sole candidate, I cannot say,” he noted.

After the exercise, Obi commended the screening committee headed by former Ebonyi State Governor, Sam Egwu, for conducting what he described as a thorough and professional exercise.

He also praised the leadership of the NDC for upholding democratic principles and due process.
