Ondo Senator Escapes Death As APC Primaries Turn Violent

A chaotic scene unfolded in the early hours of Monday, May 18, 2026 at Ward 5, Oke-Lisa/Amudipe in Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State, as suspected political thugs reportedly disrupted voting during the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary election.

Eyewitnesses said the incident caused panic in the area as sporadic gunshots were heard, forcing voters, party officials, and residents to flee for safety.

The disturbance also led to apprehension around nearby schools, including Ebenezer Primary School and St. Peter A/C Primary School, Amudipe, as parents hurried to pick up their children.

The incumbent senator for Ondo Central who is also seeking reelection, Adeniyi Adegbonmire, who was present at the ward during the exercise, alleged that the voting process was disrupted after it became clear he was leading in the counting of votes.

Describing the process as a “charade,” Adegbonmire claimed that his supporters had a significant lead before the situation escalated.

According to him, “It is a complete charade. I went to my ward, Okelisa Ward 5, Akure South Local Government today. Today is the Senate primaries for the APC. Whilst we were there, they told everybody to line up and started counting. My supporters were ahead with over 300 votes.”

He alleged that armed men later invaded the venue, fired shots into the air, and targeted his vehicle, forcing him to flee the scene.

“I can show you the bullet mark,” he added.
