Mutu Loses Re-Election Bid After 28 Years In Reps

28 years later, Hon. Nicholas Mutu on Saturday lost his bid to secure another term in the House of Representatives after suffering defeat in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency.

Mutu, who has been representing the constituency since the return of democratic rule in 1999, was defeated by Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Basil Okolobaowei Ganagana in the party’s primary election.

Announcing the result on Sunday, the returning officer, Hon. Okenmor Fidelis Tilije, declared Ganagana the winner of the APC ticket for the constituency.

Mutu’s loss brings to a close a political career in the Green Chamber that has lasted nearly three decades, making him one of the longest-serving lawmakers from the Niger Delta region.

The Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency, located in Delta State, had remained under Mutu’s representation throughout Nigeria’s current democratic dispensation.

Political observers described the outcome as a major shift in the political landscape of the constituency ahead of the next general election.
