The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified the circumstances surrounding the presence of its operatives at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), Akwa Ibom State, on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, stating that the visit was strictly administrative and not a tactical arrest operation.
In a press statement on Friday, the Commission explained that the operatives of its Uyo Zonal Directorate visited the hospital to authenticate a document, contrary to public perception that the exercise was an enforcement operation.
The EFCC further stated that no arrests were made during the visit and that staff members who accompanied its operatives to the zonal command were not detained.

Reacting to allegations of alleged brutality against hospital staff, the Commission said it was outraged by the claims but noted that it had not seen any physical evidence of injury or bodily harm to any of the individuals involved.
It added that it had commenced an internal investigation into the incident to determine whether any staff deviated from its Standard Operating Procedures.
The anti-graft agency assured the public that any officer found culpable after the investigation would be sanctioned appropriately.
While acknowledging public concern over the incident, the EFCC described the situation as an “aberration” and urged Nigerians not to allow it to be misrepresented in a way that could undermine the country’s anti-corruption efforts.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to respecting the rights of citizens while carrying out its mandate in line with the law.
