NATOP & Museum Alliance Boosts Nigerian Tourism Globally

The Nigeria Association of Tour Operators formalises a strategic alliance with the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art, as the intersection of arts, heritage, and travel is set to become the new frontier for Nigeria’s economic diversification.

This partnership, according to a statement, is aimed at repositioning the nation as a premier destination for the modern global traveller and marks a significant shift from traditional sightseeing towards immersive, authentic cultural encounters.

During a high-profile visit to the facility located at Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos, leadership from NATOP expressed a commitment to integrating the museum into the very fabric of West African travel itineraries. The move is expected to catalyse a surge in international visitor traffic while bridging the gap between Nigeria’s rich artistic history and the commercial travel sector.

“The Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art represents the kind of world-class experience that today’s travellers are looking for,” stated the NATOP leadership during the tour. “Beyond its remarkable collections, the museum offers an authentic cultural encounter that enriches how visitors understand Nigeria through its programmes and activities.

NATOP is committed to working closely with YSMA to increase its visibility among local and international tourists and to ensure it becomes a central feature in tourism itineraries across West Africa.”

As Nigeria’s first purpose-built private university museum, YSMA has consistently positioned itself as a leading institution at the intersection of culture, education, and public engagement. Since its inception, and notably being voted Museum Opening of the Year by Apollo Magazine in 2020, the museum has curated an extensive collection of artworks spanning centuries, offering a narrative of Nigeria that is both ancient and contemporary.

The alliance is designed to move beyond mere aesthetics, focusing instead on the development of curated cultural tour packages that can be marketed globally. By aligning with tour operators nationwide, the museum aims to strengthen the integration of arts and heritage into the broader Nigerian tourism landscape, ensuring that cultural assets are utilised not just for preservation but for active economic growth.

“The visit is expected to open new pathways for collaboration between YSMA and tour operators nationwide,” a museum representative noted in a statement. “This includes the development of curated cultural tour packages, increased visitor traffic to the museum, and stronger integration of arts and heritage into Nigeria’s tourism landscape. We are using art not only to preserve history but also to shape the future of cultural tourism in Nigeria and beyond,” the statement added.

For industry stakeholders, the alliance is a timely response to the evolving demands of international tourism. Modern travellers are increasingly shunning “generic” tours in favour of educational and immersive experiences. YSMA’s diverse range of exhibitions and educational programmes provides the perfect backdrop for this new era of travel.

“This is about more than just looking at paintings on a wall,” an industry consultant observed during the visit. “It is about the stories those paintings tell and how those stories can be packaged to attract the world. By working with NATOP, YSMA is ensuring that the world knows exactly where to go for the most authentic Nigerian experience.”

With its extensive collection and commitment to service and impact, YSMA continues to serve as a custodian of the nation’s artistic heritage. This new partnership with NATOP is expected to amplify that impact, ensuring that the museum’s halls become a bustling hub for global tourists seeking to discover the soul of Nigeria through its art.
