The Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, has assured the residents of the state ahead of the 2027 general elections that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is prepared to conduct fair, credible, and transparent primaries.

This is even as he said that if efforts to reach a consensus among stakeholders fail, they would conduct a direct primaries in selecting candidates for various elective offices.

Governor Buni made this declaration in a press statement issued on Sunday by his Director-General of Press and Media Affairs, Mallam Mohammed Mamman.

According to the Governor, the emergence of Baba Mallam Wali as the preferred governorship candidate followed resolutions reached at a stakeholders’ meeting held on April 23, 2026.

“The emergence of Baba Mallam Wali as the preferred governirship candidate of the party, followed the resolutions of the critical stakeholders meeting of the 23rd April 2026.

“He was endorsed and adopted as the preferred candidate, but if there is no general agreement, we shall adopt the election mode,” Buni said.

“This is not new. In 2019, I was nominated as a consensus candidate, a few other aspirants contested the decision, and we went for election where I emerged as the party’s candidate with a very wide margin.

“We are ready to repeat that history if we cannot reach consensus.”

The governor explained that consultations and dialogue were still ongoing among party stakeholders and aspirants to ensure unity within the APC.

“We are talking to each other and reaching out to the stakeholders including the aspirants to arrive at an amicable solution,” he stated.

Buni said his priority as governor was to ensure peace and cohesion within both the party and the state.

“I will be the happiest person to see the state and party peaceful and united, we remain citizens of Yobe state, and members of APC.

“My expectation is to see us more united and collectively working for our candidates to win the 2027 general election.”

The governor, who is a former National Chairman of the APC, stressed the importance of preserving the party’s ideals and unity.

“As a founding member, former Secretary and National chairman of the All Progressives Congress, the unity and progress of the party means so much to me personally.

“I will continue to support and protect the ideals of the party to remain Nigeria’s ruling political party,” he said.

Buni described Yobe as a model of participatory democracy and pledged continued adherence to transparent political processes.

“Yobe state is proudly a leading example of political transparency, internal and participatory democracy.

“We shall continue to uphold these principles to promote the policy of politics without bitterness.”

He also called on APC members across the state to remain united and mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term ambition and other party candidates in 2027.

“I call on all APC members in the state to promote unity and generate more support for the party to remain Yobe and Nigeria’s ruling political party to deliver the state to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second term bid and all other candidates of the All Progressives Congress,” Buni added.

Meanwhile, two prominent APC members in the state — former Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali, and Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai, have reportedly obtained nomination and expression of interest forms to contest the governorship position.

Both aspirants are said to be opposing the endorsement of Baba Mallam Wali and are pushing for direct primary elections.
