The newly elected National Leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has officially recognised Dr Babajide Kehinde Saheed as the Chairman of the NMA Lagos State Branch, bringing renewed clarity to the leadership structure of the association.
The recognition was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and the Annual General/Scientific Conference and Delegates Meeting (AGSC/ADM) of the association held in Kano from April 26 to May 3.
According to the press release dated Thursday, May 7, the communiqué was signed by the newly elected President of the national body, Dr Afekhinde Ernest Omoti, and the Secretary-General, Dr Tamunokuro Ezekiel Diamond.
A key section of the communiqué, listed as Observation 14, stated that: “NEC noted that the State Officers Committee (SOC) of Lagos NMA led by Dr Babajide Kehinde Saheed remains recognised.”
The declaration effectively reaffirmed the legitimacy of the Babajide-led executive council of the Lagos branch and underscored the position of the national body on the issue.
Reacting through the release, Dr Babajide Kehinde Saheed described the communiqué as a significant affirmation from the highest decision-making organ of the association.
“In view of the above statement from the newly elected National Officers Committee (NOC) of NMA, Dr Babajide Kehinde Saheed is the chairman of NMA Lagos State branch,” the statement read.
The development comes against the backdrop of internal leadership concerns within the Lagos branch of the association, with stakeholders awaiting a definitive position from the national leadership.
Observers say the recognition by NEC and the newly elected National Officers Committee may help stabilise the branch and strengthen administrative continuity within the association in Lagos State.
The communiqué also reflects the authority of the national body in resolving disputes and maintaining institutional order across state chapters of the association.
The annual conference in Kano brought together medical professionals and delegates from across Nigeria to deliberate on issues affecting healthcare delivery, professional welfare, medical ethics, and the future of the medical profession in the country.
