…May Resign as Imo Governor Ahead of Election
Fresh political developments ahead of the 2027 general elections indicate that the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, has obtained the All Progressives Congress (APC) Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms to contest the Orlu Senatorial seat.
Uzodinma, who is serving his second term as governor, was re-elected in the November 2023 governorship election and is expected to complete his tenure in office in line with constitutional provisions.
However, emerging political calculations within the ruling APC appear to have altered the governor’s trajectory ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Sources familiar with developments within the Imo APC disclosed that the governor is preparing to formally join the race for the Senate, a move that has already generated intense political discussions within the state and across the South East.
Investigations further revealed indications that Uzodinma may resign from office before the expiration of his tenure to fully concentrate on his senatorial ambition and broader national political interests.
According to a source close to the Imo State Government, consultations are ongoing within the political structure of the governor regarding succession arrangements in the event of his resignation.
The source hinted that the current Deputy Governor may step aside first to enable the governor to nominate a loyal political ally as deputy before eventually vacating office himself, in what observers describe as a strategic political transition ahead of 2027.
Political insiders also disclosed that Uzodinma is positioning himself for a possible contest for the office of the President of the Senate should the APC retain power at the federal level in the next general elections.
The Senate Presidency is expected to become a major subject of political negotiation after the elections, especially with growing conversations within the APC over zoning arrangements for key National Assembly leadership positions.
Party source believes that if the APC secures victory in the presidential election, the party may once again review the zoning formula for principal offices in the National Assembly to accommodate emerging political interests and regional balancing.
Uzodinma, a former Senator who represented Imo West Senatorial District before becoming governor, remains one of the influential political figures in the South East APC and currently chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), a position that has further elevated his profile within the ruling party.
