The Anambra State chapter of the Social Democratic Party SDP is set to welcome over 23 aspirants who defected from the embattled African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Recall that since the recent Supreme Court Judgement over the leadership of the ADC, most National and state Assembly aspirants of the party are at a loss over their prospects of contesting the 2027 general elections under the party’s platform.
Deepening their woes is the recent dumping of the ADC by former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, hence igniting their move to the SDP.
Speaking shortly after he emerged as the state Chairman of the party during the concluded state Congress, Prince Chinedu Ekwunife in Awka, he stated that the party has been emboldened by the new leadership, adding that the party has commenced the commissioning of its local government and ward offices in the 326 wards across the state.
“We have been receiving overtures mostly from the ADC due to the leadership crisis in that party, and over 23 Aspirants for the National and state Assembly positions would soon be officially received by the party very soon.
“The members and leadership of our Great party (SDP), Anambra State Chapter, elected its new State Executive at the State Congress held on 1st May 2026 at the state Secretariat, Awka”
“The event was duly monitored and supervised by the EPM INEC Awka, represented by Mr Nonso Okoli and Mr Kingsley Ajunwa, INEC officials, from about 1:30 pm till 2:30 pm.
“The Congress was very peaceful and successful as we used an affirmative consensus system in line with the construction and guidelines of the party,” he said.
Ekwunife, however, lamented that he met an empty structure but was quick to add that SDP now has 326 ward Chairmen, executives, and pulling unit coordinators who are ready, eager, willing and able to deliver all the party’s candidates in upcoming elections, both in the 2027 General elections and beyond.
